Strawberry-Flax Morning Smoothie // AND We're Off (Almost)

Around here, life tends to come in cycles. During the late spring, for instance, there is usually a month-long period when, because of the nature of our business, things feels non-stop. I mean, most days it is seriously go-go-go-go-go. Life becomes a sort of tornado -- one in which our only concerns are if the meat cooked long enough and if we'll have enough rolls to make it through the day. It's a "throw caution to the wind" kind of period where we sleep very little, completely neglect any household chores, and usually end every day wondering how in the hell we pulled the whole thing off. It's hectic and stressful and impossibly thrilling and I'm not sure if I'd be happy living any other way.

Tomorrow marks the start of another of these cycles for us as we take step one of renovating our new shop and preparing for our anticipated August opening. There is a big part of me that cannot wait for the rush of it all to begin. Yet, another part of me is smart enough to know that the long hours and constant recipe experimentation will mean I'll be sacrificing (as I often do during these times) my normally healthy day to day habits.

For a few years now, I tend to start each morning during these periods with my favorite smoothie -- one that I find to be substantial enough to carry me through to mid-day (in case time escapes me and I quite literally forget to eat) and healthy enough that -- regardless of what the day brings -- I'm sure to at least start things off with a big ol' glass of something fresh (and filled with enough antioxidants to keep my system running during these wild times).

Here's to healthy mornings!

Strawberry-Flax Morning Smoothie

- 1 banana
- 1 cup frozen strawberries
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 2-3 ice cubes

Add all ingredients to a blender and mix until smooth. Drink immediately.
